Police Shoot Dead Arab Citizen on the Abadan – Al-Falahiya Road

Ahmad Mohseni, an Arab citizen from Abadan, was killed on October 22, 2026, when police opened fire on his vehicle after he failed to stop at a checkpoint on the road between Abadan and Al-Falahiya (Shadegan). A local source reported this to the channel “Mawj al-Ahwaz”.

According to the source, police officers chased his car and shot at its tires at the intersection of the city of Darkhuin. The car overturned and Ahmad was seriously injured. He was taken to the hospital in Al-Falahiya, about 20 kilometers from the scene, where he died of his wounds.

The police command of the Ahwaz province has so far issued no statement on the incident, and no charge has been announced against the victim. The reason for the pursuit remains unknown.

The Alahwazi Organization for Human Rights (A.O.H.R) considers the incident an extrajudicial killing. Failing to stop at a checkpoint, even if confirmed, does not justify the use of lethal force. Iran is a party to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, whose Article 6 prohibits the arbitrary deprivation of life. The UN Basic Principles on the Use of Force and Firearms by Law Enforcement Officials (1990) also limit lethal force to cases of imminent threat to life.

The incident comes days after the killing of the young man Ali al-Zughaibi by security forces’ gunfire in the city of Ahwaz, which the organization documented. It also coincides with the expansion of security measures in Ahwazi cities and a growing number of checkpoints at their entrances and exits. In the organization’s view, these measures aim to intimidate residents and instill fear in the streets.

The organization demands an independent and impartial investigation, the publication of its findings and the prosecution of those responsible, compensation for the victim’s family, and an end to the use of firearms against civilians at checkpoints. It also calls on the UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions to follow up on the case.
