Ecocide and Demographic Cleansing in Ahwaz

Ecocide and Demographic Cleansing in Ahwaz: Displacement of Thousands from over 150 Villages and the Ghaizaniya Oil Regions Amidst Energy Corporations’ Complicity and Systematic Settlement Policies

In an extremely critical documentation of the tragic humanitarian reality in the Ahwaz region, field reports and human rights evidence have revealed harrowing dimensions of the policies of ecocide, human destruction, and demographic cleansing practiced by the authorities and oil corporations against the indigenous Arab population. This composite crime is starkly manifested in the Ghaizaniya sub-district (the major oil sites located about 45 to 50 kilometers east of the city of Ahwaz, extending geographically to the outskirts of the city of Al-Fallahiya), where the earth’s immense wealth is being drained in exchange for imposing a destructive environmental, health, and living blockade aimed at uprooting the historical owners of the land.

Ecocide and Concealing Thousands of Victims: The deliberate policies of drying up water bodies and rivers and polluting the environment surrounding the oil fields have resulted in a major health crisis; dangerous and fatal diseases have spread among the population, causing hundreds of deaths annually (and perhaps thousands over past years), amidst absolute governmental cover-up and media blackouts preventing the publication of true statistics on the number of victims. This represents a practical implementation of deliberately inflicting conditions of life calculated to bring about physical destruction in whole or in part.

Mass Forced Displacement and Draining Livelihoods: As a result of the destruction of agriculture, the prohibition of livestock grazing, and the lack of safe drinking water, more than 150 Ahwazi villages and towns have been subjected to mass forced displacement operations, leading to the uprooting of thousands of Arab citizens from their historical settlement areas, leaving them homeless and without a source of livelihood, to live as forcibly displaced persons in their own homeland.

Occupational Cleansing and Systematic Settler Colonization: As part of a long-term security and demographic engineering aimed at preventing indigenous people from reclaiming their land or demanding their right to self-determination, oil companies and their contractors (such as the “Iran Ofoq” company) deliberately exclude local Arab labor entirely from job opportunities in their fields. Meanwhile, employees, workers, and settlers arriving from other Persian regions and ethnicities from outside the region are brought in and settled, and all living privileges and integrated infrastructure are provided to them, to create a loyal human shield that demographically alters the identity of the land.

Planned Societal Collapse: This systematic starvation, deprivation, and psychological and living pressure have struck at the core of the social fabric of Ahwazi society, causing:

  • The spread of extreme poverty and deliberate unemployment among heads of households and youth.

  • The spread of illiteracy and families’ inability to educate their children, leading to school dropouts.

  • The fracturing and breakup of wide families under the weight of living collapse.

  • The expansion of drug addiction among youth as an indirect tool to drain the energies of the rising generation and break any societal resistance will.

Legal and International Qualification of the Crime (Rising to the Level of Genocide): International criminal studies confirm that these practices are not merely living violations, but rise in their established elements to the crime of Genocide and crimes against humanity, based on the following legal foundations:

  • Genocide through the destruction of conditions of survival: According to Article II (paragraph c) of the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, through the deliberate infliction on the group of environmental, health, and living conditions (environmental destruction, fatal diseases, lack of care, and cover-up of death tolls) calculated to bring about its physical and human destruction.

  • Mass forced displacement: As a crime against humanity under Article 7 of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, resulting from the forceful transfer and deportation of the population from their historical lands.

  • Ethnic and economic persecution: Through systematic forced deprivation of fundamental rights and employment opportunities based on national identity in favor of other nationalities.

  • Settlement demographic change: A flagrant violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention and customary humanitarian principles prohibiting the creation of population changes and the settling of settlers in controlled territories.

This document constitutes a damning historical and legal record that condemns these systematic practices and places researchers and the international community before the undeniable truth of what the Ahwazi people are subjected to in terms of silent ecocidal and human extermination.
